“Trayvon
Benjamin Martin, a seventeen year old African American child walking in the
street just a short distance from his father’s home was gunned down by a white
man one rainy February night in Florida. The killer was briefly detained by the
white cops and then released without charge. Trayvon’s lifeless body was tested
for drugs and alcohol and carted off to the morgue, where it lay unclaimed for
two days. The white authorities made no attempt to contact Tracy’s next of kin.
For them, he was just black man gunned down in the street, nothing unusual,
nothing to make a fuss over.” (OCCUPYING WESTERN CIVILIZATION, p. 1)
That
was February 2012; and the president of the most powerful nation on the planet
was a black man. Michael Brown was gunned down last Saturday in Ferguson,
Missouri; and the black man is still president of the most powerful nation on
the planet.
Isn’t it time for black people—even
intellectuals—to be serious about serving our interests, to be seriously
self-serving?
