Are these pollsters joking or what? Or are they just going
along with the elaborate hoax? Are they not familiar with the opening paragraph
of chapter 18, “How rulers should keep their promises,” of Machiavelli, The Prince, where the father of Western
political thought says:
“Everyone knows how praiseworthy it is for a ruler to keep
his promises, and live uprightly and not by trickery. Nevertheless, experience
shows that in our times the rulers who have done GREAT things are those who
have set little store by keeping their word, being skillful rather in cunningly
deceiving men; they have got the better of those who have relied on being
trustworthy.”
A ruler, then, can’t be trustworthy if he is to do GREAT
things, such as, for example, making America GREAT again.
